Used pallets can lower packaging cost and keep serviceable wood in circulation, but a recycled-pallet order still needs a clear specification. Size, grade, repair history, board condition, contamination, moisture, and prior use influence whether a pallet is appropriate for a particular load or customer.
A Grade Used Pallets
A-grade pallets are generally selected when buyers want cleaner appearance, fewer repairs, and more consistent presentation. They may be appropriate for repeat-use programs, visible customer deliveries, or cleaner facilities. A Grade is still used material and can show surface wear, stamps, nail marks, and color variation.
B Grade Used Pallets
B-grade pallets commonly show more repairs, reinforced stringers, discoloration, or cosmetic variation. They can be a practical choice for domestic one-way shipments and internal moves when the repaired condition is acceptable. Grade definitions vary by supplier, so the purchase order should state the characteristics the buyer will accept.
Inspection Points
Buyers should consider broken or missing boards, protruding fasteners, block or stringer damage, repair methods, deck-board spacing, contamination, odor, moisture, and whether the pallet remains square enough for the handling system. Automated equipment, racking, food, pharmaceutical, and export programs can require tighter controls.
Matching the Pallet to the Load
Provide the total load weight, packaging type, weight distribution, handling equipment, storage method, and number of anticipated trips. A recycled pallet that works for evenly distributed cartons on the floor may not be appropriate for concentrated loads or unsupported rack storage.
Availability and Consistency
Recycled inventory changes as cores enter the local market. A recurring buyer should discuss acceptable substitutions, grade tolerance, forecasted volume, rejection procedures, and emergency requirements before service begins. New or remanufactured pallets may be preferable when consistent construction is more important than the lowest unit price.
Used Pallets for Export
Do not assume that a used pallet with an old treatment mark is suitable for a new international shipment. Repairs, mark legibility, destination requirements, and program controls must be reviewed. See Heat-Treated Pallets and ISPM-15.
