48 × 40 Pallet Specifications
What buyers should confirm before ordering the most common North American pallet footprint.

The 48-inch by 40-inch footprint is widely used in North American distribution, but the outside dimensions alone do not define a complete pallet. New, recycled, stringer, block, two-way, partial four-way, and full four-way designs can share the same footprint while behaving differently under a load.
Start With the Unit Load
A useful specification begins with the product: total weight, footprint, weight distribution, packaging strength, center of gravity, and whether the load is secured by stretch wrap, straps, adhesive, or other methods. Concentrated loads can stress deck boards differently from cartons distributed across the full surface.
Entry and Material-Handling Equipment
Confirm whether forklifts, pallet jacks, automated guided vehicles, conveyors, or hand trucks will handle the pallet. Stringer notches may provide partial four-way forklift entry without allowing the same access for a pallet jack. Block pallets and stringer pallets also interact differently with certain conveyor and racking systems.
Deck Configuration
Top-board count and spacing affect support under cartons, bags, drums, pails, and other packaging. Small packages may bridge poorly across wide gaps. Bottom-board configuration affects conveyor contact, stacking, and stability. If a current pallet works well, photographs and measured board dimensions can help a supplier reproduce the important characteristics.
New, Recycled, or Remanufactured
A new pallet is built primarily from new lumber to an agreed construction. A recycled pallet has been used and may have been inspected and repaired. A remanufactured or combination pallet may use a mixture of new and recovered components. These categories can offer different balances of consistency, cost, appearance, and sustainability.
Racking Requires Extra Attention
Do not assume that a pallet is rackable merely because it holds the product on the floor. Rack span, load position, pallet orientation, duration, temperature, moisture, and the stiffness of the pallet components all influence performance. High-risk or unusual loads should be evaluated by a qualified unit-load or packaging professional.
Export and Treatment
Wood packaging used in international trade may need compliant treatment and marking. If the load will cross an international border, review the program requirements before ordering and read our heat-treated pallet guide. Treatment does not replace a sound construction specification.
Information to Put on a Quote Request
Include the 48 × 40 dimensions, new or used preference, anticipated grade, quantity per order, frequency, load weight, handling method, racking or conveyor use, heat-treatment requirement, delivery ZIP code, and receiving hours. This reduces substitutions and makes delivered-price comparisons more meaningful.
